Room to Care. Time to Give.

We're raising $2.6 million to help create the modern, state-of-the-art emergency department (ED) our community needs and deserves. Please join us today by supporting the new ED at the Misericordia Community Hospital.

Each year, the Misericordia ED sees more than 50,000 patient visits – twice the capacity it was designed to support.

Patients come from across the Edmonton area and northern Alberta at a time of urgent need and great vulnerability.

Testimonials

Alf and Judy together

Alf and Judy

“When your husband is having a heart attack, the first thing you think about is the worst-case scenario,” says Judy – her husband, Alf, went to the Misericordia emergency department (ER) in September 2021 to receive emergency care for a heart attack.

While Alf was impressed by the excellent care he received from the nurses and doctors who thoroughly explained everything and related to him on a personal level, Judy was grateful for the Misericordia staff who took the time to provide regular updates on her husband’s condition.

“The care Alf got at the Misericordia meant I was able to sleep that night – not well, of course, but at least I knew he was okay,” Judy says. “I have a lot of faith in the Misericordia now.”

As residents of Edmonton’s west end, Alf and Judy are looking forward to the new, state-of-the-art Misericordia ER currently under construction in their community.

Judy says, “I think having the new Misericordia emergency department will make a huge difference to the staff who take excellent care of patients like Alf and family members like me.”

Herbert on top of a mountain with his arms outstretched triumphantly

Herbert

When 22-year-old nursing student Herbert suffered an ankle injury while indoor rock climbing, continuing his active lifestyle seemed uncertain. But thanks in part to the exceptional care he received at the Misericordia emergency department, Herbert ran his first-ever marathon seven months later. Herbert is grateful for the excellent care he received from Misericordia emergency staff and was especially inspired by the holistic care he witnessed staff provide to the other patients around him in the ER.

He is excited to see the new emergency department open: “I saw firsthand how well the Misericordia staff treated me and other patients when we needed it most. I can only imagine how helpful it will be for both Misericordia staff and patients to have a modern, purpose-built emergency department in the community.”

Janet in her office

Janet

When Janet started her bike commute to work on September 28, 2021, she didn't expect she would end up in the Misericordia emergency department instead. But after hitting a crack in some rough terrain, Janet fell and broke her collarbone and a few ribs. She was taken via ambulance to the Misericordia emergency department.

Although it was during the height of a COVID-19 wave, Janet was struck by the exceptional care she received from the nurses and doctors who treated her: “The nurses and staff were wonderful, and that’s what I remember most from my experience," she says. "They were busy, of course, but they were attentive, friendly, and efficient. It was really great.”

Janet was treated holistically and with compassion when she needed it most, which is why she recognizes the importance of Covenant Foundation donors who are helping fund enhancements for the new Misericordia emergency department.

“It’s very challenging when you’re in an emergency situation. You feel kind of vulnerable, you don’t always know what’s happening and it’s not really somewhere you want to be. That’s why it’s great to be treated by sympathetic and patient staff who have the facilities and equipment they need to help you feel better.”

Treena against a brick background

Treena

Treena never imagined that the daughter she brought into the world at the Misericordia would be the one to take her back into the same hospital for the lifesaving care she would need over 40 years later.

“If she hadn’t brought me to the Misericordia Emergency Department, I wouldn’t be here telling my story today,” she says.

Thanks to the exceptional care the kind emergency doctors and nurses provided during Treena's moment of greatest need, she's now happy, healthy, and enjoying life to the fullest. And she says it's all because of the hospital she has trusted to care for her for the last four decades.

May 2021

We’re excited to share new drone footage that shows the progress on the Misericordia ED construction.

All emergency department areas will be on the main floor with general treatment in the centre, mental health on the left, and radiology and staff spaces on the right. The levels above are for the mechanical systems like heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The project is on schedule to open in 2023.

“People are extremely excited,” says Heath Ramsden, clinical liaison at the Misericordia Community Hospital. “The Misericordia ED project is that shining star, the thing people can feel passionate about.”
