Planned Giving

Planned giving is the commitment to leaving a gift to a charity of your choice. Regardless of the amount of your income or assets, you can plan a legacy gift that will support an organization you care about. No planned gift is too small. Your planned gift to our foundation would represent a significant contribution to our mission while providing you and your loved ones with tax and estate planning benefits.

We have a range of planned giving options that may be of interest to you.

Types of planned gifts

Bequests are the most common form of planned giving we work with. There are three types of bequests: specific bequests, in which the donor gives a specific dollar amount or specific property, such as art, real estate, or stocks; residual bequest, which gives the charity the remainder of the estate after taxes, expenses and other bequests; and contingent bequests, which are contingent on another event, such as the death of a beneficiary. Making a bequest to us requires writing your wish to make the gift into your will.

Endowment gifts involve a transfer of money or property, usually with the stipulation that it be invested and the principal remaining intact to provide for long-term and continual impact.

Although charitable gifts can be made at any time, due to the financial planning advantages of planned giving, it is wise to plan your contribution well in advance.

Due to the sensitive nature of planned giving, we recommend that in order to ensure your generosity is aligned with your giving and financial goals, you consult with legal and financial advisors.

The Impact of Planned Giving

During the sunset years of his life, well-loved Banff resident Joe Switzer sincerely appreciated the attention and high level of care he received, especially at the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital. Because he was passionate about his Rocky Mountain town of Banff and wanted to give back to the community he loved, Joe left a generous legacy gift of more than $248,000 to our foundation to help fund the upcoming renovation of the Banff hospital’s emergency waiting room and triage area, as well as help provide enhancements to the hospital’s palliative care room. Through his remarkable generosity and love for his community, Joe left a legacy that will help transform emergency and palliative care in the Bow Valley for generations to come.
